Workshop 2: Friday March 27, 9:00 – 13:00

Reliability in Disaggregated Optical Networks

This workshop is organized by the Horizon 2020 EU project Metro Haul. The disaggregation trend in optical network is quite manifest in the metro space, with several initiatives looking to harmonize data and control plane management under commonly agreed models. This half-day Workshop first aims at providing an update on state-of-the-art disaggregation in metro networks and on applicability trends towards disaggregated access and long-haul optical networks. Then, it will focus on reliability aspects in disaggregated optical networks. More specifically, the WS will provide an overview on challenges, benefits, and drawbacks of optical white boxes in the context of network reliability, discussing the potential economic benefits and long term expectations from a market perspective. The WS will start with Network Operator views and then have experts from Metro Haul and different Industry sectors discuss their challenges and solution proposals.
The workshop will conclude with a panel to foster discussions, deliberation about issues, and cross‐fertilization.

Edge/Fog opportunities in the 5G era

The future of networking seems to be more and more dominated by two concepts: softwarization and virtualization. Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) are the two innovations that embody these concepts in network control and application verticals: their combination allows to perfectly integrate the control of network and computing resources. This technological breakthrough is bringing to a gradual shift from the well-established Cloud computing to Fog and Edge computing paradigms, pushing the added value of the Internet closer to users, with many advantages in terms of performance, and first of all a drastic reduction of delays. 5G is both favoring and taking advantage of this evolution, with for instance the standardization of the Multi Access Edge Computing (MEC). In order to convert this momentum into new business opportunities, a substantial effort is needed from the major players. Equipment vendors, network operators, service providers, not only should exploit this newly-opened market, but should also co-operate with the research and education institutions to spread the know-how and promote training of future professional specialists.

In this workshop, views and visions from the above-mentioned players are presented to the attendees by an eminent keynote speaker and other distinguished speakers, who will also discuss between each other and with the public about the topic in a final panel.
